Welcome to Dawn Adcock's Knitting Notebook

Personal Homepage of Dawn's Dream Designs

I've been knitting since I was a child, first taught by my Norwegian grandmother, then I had more "formal" instruction in grade school Home Ec class.  Since then I've learned many techniques from books, formal classes at Stitches, TKGA, and many other conventions and seminars, and from the email knitting lists.

Published Design Work:

I launched my professional design business, Dawn's Dream Designs, in 2002.

NEW! For information on ordering my patterns, please visit my Pattern page!  Patterns that are now available:

bullet Softly Scalloped Nightie pattern. A simple to knit, yet sophisticated looking nightgown.  Soft for sleeping or lounging, with a graceful, flowing skirt, adjustable waist, and loosely knit eyelash top that easily adapts to different widths.
bullet Hidden Heart Nightie. A snuggly soft nightgown with front tie panels that cover an inset panel which reveals a lace heart and front side slits hiding beneath, (that also makes it useful as a nursing gown!) Adjustable straps tie along the back and adjust the width to fit. Written in 5 sizes, and easily adjustable with ties when worn.
bullet SSSBweb.jpg (33935 bytes)Sweet and Simple Swaddling Blanket, My specialty baby bunting blanket pattern. It's a wonderful baby gift that is definitely one of a kind!  It's a hooded baby blanket that also folds up into a snuggly bunting held closed by a bottom pocket, with the ease of large buttonhole in center back for infant car seat belt use!
bullet hpfs4x6web.jpg (39045 bytes)Hot Pocket Felted Slippers These felted wool slippers are quick to knit, and extra warm. A pocket is added to the top of a basic beginner’s sock that holds a felted wool pouch insert. The pouch is filled with dried rice or grains before closing, and then it is micro waved and inserted into the slipper pocket for long lasting warmth. Novelty yarn may be added to the cuffs and pocket tops for fun effects after felting.  (Shown here before and after felting.)
bullet shapelysecretspairwebsale.jpg (28423 bytes)Shapely Secrets Socks A sock pattern of tricks for shaping stockinette stitch socks for a better, snugger fit to hug your legs and your ankles, but without interrupting the stitch pattern of the self-patterning sock yarns.  Features special ankle stitch shaping and graduated top ribbing, and knit at a good solid fabric gauge.  A unique concept for those great patterned sockyarns!
bullet popcornlacewebsale.jpg (60514 bytes)Popcorn Lace Socks Using ribbing in your socks doesn’t have to be boring! These socks incorporate 3 steps of ribbing in their design, using both lace and texture for visual interest as well as a comfortable fit.
bullet Garter Shell Lace Wimple. This dressy but practical head and neck covering starts with a scalloped garter edge, then a simple shell lace with garter stitch for the main body. The tube width is slowly narrowed for a snugger fit around the head and face when worn up, and to sit neatly around the neck when worn down.
bullet Julia's Hat Knit sideways with short row wedges. Popcorn edges and top fringes are knit on as you go, the only finishing is to sew the cast on to bind off edges (or use a provisional cast on to graft the ends together for a no-seam hat).  Knit in variegated yarns for fun striping.
bullet Sure Fit Sampler Hat A simple to knit hat, worked in the round, or flat and sewn, with a hidden ribbed band under the turned up cuff that helps the hat fit, and stay on. Also looks wonderful in color-changing yarns, especially Noro's Kureyon and Silk Garden, or with the sections knit in different solid color bands.
bullet katescapecomboweb.jpg (31223 bytes)Kate's Cape A little girl’s cape with lots of room for movement and play, that is quick to knit using chunky brushed yarn that also gives lots of body and warmth. Worked top-down with easy shaping, and a simple decorative crochet scallop bind-off that gives extra-cute girl appeal.  Pattern currently published in the 2007 Knitting Pattern a Day Calendar, by Accord Publishing, but also available for purchase individually  from my site.

My Nationally published designs and articles can be found in these publications:

I have shared some of my small project patterns online, as my way of giving back to the wonderful online knitting community.  Please browse through them:  Free Patterns Page

I've never been a knitter who wanted to follow written patterns, preferring to do what was in my head.  Then, after other knitters see something I've designed and knit, they usually ask "Can you write that down for me to knit?", so now I am.  Check back for more info on my designs in the future!

Knitting Instructor:   Knitting Class Info!

I am also a professional knitting instructor.  I teach both beginner and more advanced knitting classes at the Crystal Lake, IL, Hobby Lobby store.

For Information on my classes offered at Hobby Lobby, Click Here.

Feel free to contact me for information on classes, or if your knitting group in the Chicagoland area is looking for an instructor for various topics.  I'd be happy to travel to other guilds or shops in the area to conduct workshops.

Knitting Awards:

My knitting awards include 2 Wisconsin State Fair first place Blue ribbons, plus a Blue Best of Show, for my original sock designs (2001 and 2002); plus a second place Red ribbon for my original design Knotted and Baby Cabled mohair blend pullover (2002). I stopped entering fairs after this, to concentrate more on my designing and teaching business.

Knitting Guild Founder:

I started my local knitting guild in the fall of 1999 in Northern Illinois, since I didn't know any other knitters locally, but hoped they were out there somewhereIndeed, they were! We've been together and growing rapidly ever since.  I maintain our guild website with info here:  Cultured Purls of McHenry County

Spinner:

I also became a spinner in 2001, and I'm enjoying learning this fibercraft and making handspun yarn from natural fibers for my knitting use.  Pictures of my wheels and some of my skeins are on my Spinning page, with updates as I have time to spin more skeins.

Online Knitting World:

I am a member of the KnitList, the Socknitters, the Ample Knitters, and the SpinList email lists (among many others), and would recommend joining them to any knitter or spinner wishing to expand their horizons, not to mention making new knitting friends!

I met my best Knit Buddy, Barbara (on right, below), from the KnitList in 1998.  I finally got to meet her in person on a joint family trip in 2002, (plus we've enjoyed other fun joint trips in 2003, 2004, and 2006)!  Here we are in the back of her van, knitting in hand, of course.

These pages are basically to have a place to keep my graphics of my FOs (Finished Objects), and a few of my original free designs to share with my online friends.  Browse around if you like, and email any comments to me.

Click on the Sock picture above for my Socknitting Page, or the knitting girl and boy picture for my General Knitting Page.   On the link to my Free Patterns page you'll find patterns of some of my designs that I'm happy to share with you for your personal use (please respect my copyright, noted on each pattern, and use these for your personal, not-for-profit use only).
